Production and Distribution of Electricity and Heat
In electric vehicles, propulsion is ensured by an electric motor powered by batteries. To ensure autonomy and traction power, they must have high energy and power content, of the order of tens of kWh and kW respectively. Electric vehicle offers high efficiency, no noise and no emissions. Batteries need to be recharged via the grid. Emissions of electric vehicles are only related to the production of electricity and the mix of energy sources used for such production. The sales of electric vehicles are increasing, although the are still less than hybrid cars (HEVs), with very high growth rates especially in China, the world's leading market. In Italy, the number of registered electric vehicles (BEV, "Battery Electrical Vehicle") were 10,577 in 2019 (0.5% of the total), 32,538 in 2020 (2.3% of the total) and 38,744 until August 2021 (3.6% of the total). It is evident a clear growth in the sales of electric cars in the last 3 years. This depends mainly on the increase in charging infrastructure and on the incentive mechanisms that the Italian State has increased during the last three years. The market interest in electric and hybrid vehicles is linked to greater efficiency and lower environmental impact than traditional vehicles, both locally (vehicle emissions) and globally (linked to the production of fuel and electricity), with a consequent reduction in CO2 emissions, fine particles and other air pollutants
