Production and Distribution of Electricity and Heat

The pulp and paper production sector ranks fifth globally for energy consumption in manufacturing, absorbing 6.45 EJ, equal to about 5% of final consumption in industry and 1.5% of total final consumption. Although the use of renewable sources, especially biomass integrated by the production chain, is very relevant and covers about 41% of the final consumption mix, the energy intensities of the production process are very significant and require efforts to increase efficiencies and increase the penetration of other energy sources and carriers. Overall, the world produces about 183 million tons of cellulose pulp every year of which about a third are produced in North America, about 26% in Europe, 23% in Asia and 16% in Latin America. As for the production of paper and cardboard, global production amounts to 412.5 million tons of which about 50% is located in Asia, 25% in Europe, 19% in North America and 5% in Latin America.
