Residential and service technology
The reduction of building energy needs for heating and cooling can be guaranteed either by interventions of retrofit on the building envelope and/or on the improvement of the technical systems. This document is focused on the description of insulating materials and technologies to be applied on the building envelope (walls, roofs ceilings and ground floor) or for thermal bridge correction. Currently, the thermal insulation of the building envelope can be realized by using insulating panels of different materials such as polystyrene, polyurethane, mineral wool, natural fibers, or reflective panels). The market trend is to substitute plastic insulating materials for mineral ones, which, despite their higher costs, are non-flammable and have a lower environmental impact than plastic materials. Production technology of insulating materials is also improved, showing a progressive increase of the environmental and energy performance (with a consequent reduction in operation costs for final users). On the regulatory level, both in Europe and Italy, the trend is to realize high performance building envelopes (Nearly-Zero-Energy-Building, NZEB) which allow the reduction of winter and summer thermal loads and involve the systematic use of renewable energy sources
