Production and Transformation of Primary Energy
Biogas production is receiving a continuousattention for the production of renewable energy (electricity and heat)and biofuels (biomethane and hydrogen), and the reduction of the greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions. This trend is driven by the growing market demand for green energy and fuels, with asubstantial optimization of the available technologies. The increased performance of today’s anaerobic digesters (AD) stems from the development of modern high-rate reactors. Today’s feedstock mostly consists ofagricultural waste and energy crops, organic waste, wastewater, and other organic and food residuals. Farm-basedplants (fed by agricultural feedstock) are dominating the market, followed bymunicipal wastewater treatment plants, industrial biogas plants (mainly in the food industry) and plants processing theorganic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW).
