Refrigerators

The market of refrigerators is close to saturation in all developed countries. The diffusion of refrigerators in Italian households is nearly total and equal to 99.6%.
In 2018 the total number of appliances in Italian households was estimated at 28,981,000 units, of which 24,853,000 in main homes (those defined by ISTAT Italian Statistics as occupied by resident people) and 4,128,000 in secondary homes. The refrigerators market is essentially a substitution (or replacement) market while only new families purchase a refrigerator for the first time.
Based on the last available data (2019), about 1,459,000 refrigerators have been manufactured and introduced in the Italian market in 2018, a number very similar to 2017 and 2016, which indicates a substantial market stability. However, these numbers are significantly lower than those from previous years (i.e., about 1,800,000 units per year). In contrast, in 2020 the number of units purchased in Italy increased up to about 1,900,000, with basically constant sales over the last two years, and a market penetration of 6% of the total big appliances.
ISTAT data also show that cold appliances are the second most expensive item for appliances in Italian families, with an expense of 2 Euros per month per family, with the first one being the washing devices at about 3.3 Euros per month per family.
