Tumble Dryers

Tumble dryers for household use have been present in the Italian market for many years and they are more and more used in everyday life, thanks to the important service offered in terms of time and space saving for indoor drying to replace outdoor drying. The market maturity of the heat pump technology has made possible to considerably reduce the energy consumption of tumble dryers and open the market to much more families than before. Also, the decrease in production costs contributed to making them common appliances, similar to the washing machines.
The Italian market of tumble dryers is a market of stock constitution with also a share of replacement of old appliances thanks to the introduction of the heat pump technology. According to Italian Statistics (ISTAT), in 2013 some 3.3% of Italian families owned a tumble dry. In 2016, this share was estimated at about 4.9%, with a stock of tumble dryers of a little less than 1.3 millions of units, annual sales of about 330,000 and purchase price of some 640 Euros. In 2019, annual sales topped 900,000 with a 20% annual increase. Today’s household tumble dryers exceed 5,000,000 units with yearly sales of about 700,000-900,000 units. According to the Association of Appliances Manufacturers (APPLiA, Home Appliance Europe), big appliances in Italy in 2020 had a good market share, with increases in terms of value (+0.8%), domestic volume (+0.3%) and export volume (+2.2%). In particular, some 700,000 tumble dryers have been sold in Italy in 2020 at an average price of about 540 Euros. Thus, 2020 was characterized by a market stability regarding this product, which is now more present in the Italian houses (about 7% of the big appliances), with most frequent customers being families with children. A further market share increase is possible if sale prices and energy consumptions of tumble dryers will continue to reduce.
